Qualcomm Launches Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 With 23% GPU Boost and Agentic AI for Smarter Smartphones

September 25, 2025 — Qualcomm today officially introduced its next-generation smartphone SoC: the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. This new chip aims to push the boundaries of mobile performance, efficiency, and on-device AI, bringing enhancements to CPU, GPU, NPU, and intelligence capabilities.


What’s New in Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5

Architecture & Manufacturing

Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 is built on TSMC’s advanced 3nm N3P node, making it not only faster but also more power efficient than its predecessor. The company continues with its Oryon CPU cores, now in their third generation, to ensure consistent gains in raw performance while lowering thermal output.

CPU: Speed, Cores & Efficiency

The chip carries a 2 Prime + 6 Performance core setup, where Prime cores peak at 4.6 GHz. Qualcomm says this brings a 20% CPU performance jump with 35% greater efficiency, ensuring flagship smartphones can sustain demanding tasks without compromising battery life. On a system level, the SoC offers a 16% reduction in overall power draw, a crucial improvement for heavy multitasking and gaming.

GPU & Graphics

A major highlight is the Adreno GPU, now boasting a 23% performance uplift. Paired with 18 MB of High Performance Memory, the GPU reduces latency while cutting bandwidth demands, particularly useful in high-resolution gaming. Importantly, GPU efficiency has also improved, with Qualcomm promising 20% lower power consumption compared to last generation. This ensures smoother gameplay and higher frame rates without overheating or rapid battery drain.

NPU, AI & Agentic AI

Artificial intelligence is at the core of Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. The Hexagon NPU now delivers 37% better performance and enhanced efficiency. More notably, Qualcomm is positioning this chip as the first to natively support Agentic AI — a paradigm shift where AI assistants become proactive “agents.” Instead of simply responding to prompts, these agents can analyze context, anticipate user needs, and perform tasks across apps automatically. Combined with hardware-level acceleration on the Oryon CPU, smartphones can handle advanced AI features entirely on-device, reducing dependence on cloud servers.

Imaging & Multimedia

The 20-bit Spectra ISP dramatically improves dynamic range, capturing images and video with 4× more detail in highlights and shadows. Video creators will benefit from the new Advanced Professional Video codec, which enables near-lossless recording with advanced editing flexibility. Qualcomm’s Dragon Fusion computational pipeline, powered by AI, applies real-time tone mapping, exposure adjustments, and color corrections, rivaling professional-grade editing software. Audio also gets a boost with Snapdragon Audio Sense, which introduces wind suppression, audio zoom, and MEMS microphone tuning for studio-level sound capture.

Connectivity

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 integrates the X85 5G modem, enabling faster upload speeds, stronger coverage, and improved efficiency. It also retains FastConnect 7900, supporting Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, and Ultra-Wideband (UWB). This ensures seamless wireless performance for cloud gaming, AR/VR experiences, and IoT connectivity.

Availability & OEM Partners

Qualcomm has also confirmed partnerships with Samsung, OnePlus, OPPO, Honor, Sony, and ZTE, ensuring the chip will be at the heart of most 2026 Android flagships.

Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S26 series is widely expected to feature the new chipset, especially in markets where Qualcomm processors dominate. With Apple’s A19 Pro and MediaTek’s Dimensity 9400 also competing in the premium smartphone space, 2026 is shaping up to be a landmark year for mobile performance wars.
